Hadlaubstrasse: quiet residential street or major transit traffic road?

Traffic sneaking through Hadlaubstrasse early in the morning and from late afternoon until early evening has been steadily increasing for years. In addition to noise and exhaust fumes, this cut-through traffic also poses a danger to children, elderly people, and pets. Sidewalks and garage forecourts are repeatedly driven over when vehicles swerve to pass.

A large share of the traffic is not caused by residents and their guests or local access traffic, but rather by transit traffic trying to bypass congestion on Gladbachstrasse, Vogelsangstrasse, Universitätsstrasse, Winterthurerstrasse, and at Rigiplatz.

Why has sneak traffic grown so much in recent years?

Real-time navigation systems (like Google) are a major contributing factor, as they suggest alternative routes through residential streets during congestion on main traffic arteries—thereby significantly undermining official efforts to channel transit traffic onto the designated main routes.

What we aim for

We want to reduce the 'rat running' through our neighbourhood, especially on Hadlaubstrasse.

The city shall carry out the following surveys on Hadlaubstrasse:

  • Noise measurements over a longer period of time
  • Traffic count with qualitative distinction between transit- and local traffic
  • Speed control over a longer period of time

Based on these results, we would like to discuss with the City of Zürich tangible measures in order to make Hadlaubstrasse a quiet residential street again, offering residents safety and quality of life: for young and old, on two and four legs, on foot, by bicycle and, yes, also by car… After all, local residents who drive cars also benefit from less transit traffic.

These measures are intended to reduce traffic on Hadlaubstrasse without placing additional strain on other small streets in the surroudings. We are convinced that, in addition to micro-measures, a comprehensive strategy is needed to tackle critical points beyond the small streets in the neighbourhood.
